It’s football season – I love football. I actually try to arrange my chores around the house so as to not to interfere with the games I want to watch. Sometimes it’s not an issue because some of the teams I pull for don’t play very well – and I’d rather do chores than to watch them get the stuffing beat out of them.
But if you’ve been keeping up with the news – it seems that instead of it being football season – it’s become open season on the family. Sometimes I wonder if these guys are football players or wanna be UFC fighters. The problem is they aren’t fighting men their own size. Instead, they are abusing their wives and children. It’s become open season on children and spouses in the NFL!
Hearing all these reports made me stop and think for a moment about the successful family. What does it really take to have a successful, happy, functional family? All of NFL families in question already have what we want. They are living our dream. Fame and fortune are at their fingertips. They have more money than any of us will ever see in our lifetime. They have the mansions and all the trappings that go with their fortunes. In other words, they have everything we’re killing ourselves to obtain.
However, their families are a train wreck! Wives being knocked out, head butted, children being threatened and physically abused. What happened? God gives us some insight to that question:
“Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain.” Psalm 127:1
Here’s what God is saying – grab all the money and things you want – grab all the fame and power and recognition you want – but toys and money and power won’t make a family. You need me in order to make your family work! Don’t waste your time focusing on work, activities, money, or things – focus on putting God in the center of your family – you’ll be glad you did!
